Scootworks Billet Grips were designed to
work with your OEM throttle tube on the RH side, and fit onto the smooth 1" diameter section on the LH side of your
handlebars. Installation is very conventional, and grip adhesive is supplied. Read these instructions before
beginning installation.
Tools Needed
3/32" allen wrench
Razor Blade or sharp knife
60 or 100 grit sandpaper
file or dremel tool w/cut-off wheel
Examine/Learn about your Grips
Unpack the handgrip barrels (bodies)
first. DO NOT install the set-screws at this time. You'll notice the inner bore is larger in one
barrel...this is the barrel for the throttle side (RH side). The barrel with the smaller bore is
for the 'clutch side' (LH side). Also, notice that one end of each barrel has an additional machined
inner edge, this is where the end cap or adapter (if purchased) is installed, and should point outward
(away from the handlebars).
DO NOT install the end caps or adapters at this time...
this will be discussed later.
Begin installation for RH (Throttle) side...
Cover your gas tank, front fender, or any
other painted surface close to your handlebars that glue can drip on.
Begin removal of your RH stock grip. Remove any decorative
chrome end cap that might be on the RH grip end. On some Kawasaki Vulcans, you must remove the large phillips screw
from the end of the grip, this is usually RH (conventional) threads and will remove by turning
counterclockwise. On Kawasaki Vulcans without this phillips screw, you must remove the large
chrome end cap from the end of the grip, this is usually LH (reverse) threads and will remove by turning
clockwise. Some other brands may have counterweights that are removed and not reused, while most
have the chrome decorative end cap simply snapped on.
Once the end cap is removed,
use a razor blade or sharp knife to cut through the grip covering, right down to the throttle
tube. Slice the covering lengthwise and remove. Be careful to not cut into or damage the throttle
tube.
Sand or trim any remaining grip
glue from the throttle tube. Some throttle tubes are smooth and have no ridges, while others
have ridges / rings / or other friction surfaces. Test fit your throttle barrel (grip with the
larger center bore diameter) by slipping it onto your throttle tube. Throttle tubes are molded and vary in diameter. On some tubes you
may need to sand or trim the plastic ridges & rings so the throttle barrel is a very snug fit. Some
throttle tubes also have a decorative trim ring close to the switch housing that you may wish to remove with a
file / sandpaper / dremel tool or similar manner, to allow the grip to fit closer to your switch
housing. In the event your throttle tube is slightly undersized or loose, you may wrap a layer or two
of electrical tape around your throttle tube to obtain a snug fit.
Once you have obtained a snug fit,
use alcohol and a clean rag to wipe the residue or oils from the inside of your RH throttle
barrel and throttle tube. Apply a liberal amount of the supplied grip adhesive to your throttle tube
and inside of your throttle barrel. Slide the throttle barrel (with the machined end for end cap
fitment pointing outward) onto the throttle tube to within 1/8" of your switch head. If possible,
twist the barrel during installation to spread the adhesive around the entire surface. Rotate the
barrel so the allen screw holes are pointing downward. Wipe the excess grip adhesive from the
grip area and clean with alcohol as needed. Apply a small drop of grip glue to one allen screw,
and install into the hole closest to the switch head. Using a 3/32" allen wrench, tighten this allen screw
ONLY snugly. Over-tightening this screw can damage the throttle tube or cause it to bind. Allow
12 hours drying time at room temp before trying to operate throttle.
Begin installation for LH (Clutch) side...
Begin removal of your LH stock grip.
Once the end cap is removed,
use a razor blade or sharp knife to cut through the grip covering, right down to the handlebar.
Slice the covering lengthwise and remove.
Sand or trim any remaining grip
glue from the handlebar. Some handlebar ends (especially dimpled bars for internal wiring) are
no perfectly round. Test fit your LH barrel (grip with the smaller center bore diameter) by
slipping it onto your handlebars. Sand/file a small amount of material (if necessary) from the
bars to allow for a slip fit. In the event your handlebar is slightly undersized or is a loose
fitment, you may wrap a layer or two of electrical tape around your bar end to obtain a slip fit.
This is VERY rare, but can be done if needed.
Once you have obtained a slip fit,
use alcohol and a clean rag to wipe the residue or oils from the inside of your LH
barrel and handlebar end. Apply a liberal amount of the supplied grip adhesive to your throttle tube
and inside of your LH barrel. Slide the LH barrel (with the machined end for end cap
fitment pointing outward) onto the handlebar end to within 1/8" of your switch head. Twist as
the barrel is installed, to spread adhesive around the entire surface. Rotate the
barrel so the allen screw holes are pointing downward. Wipe the excess grip adhesive from the
grip area and clean with alcohol as needed. Apply a small drop of grip glue to one allen screw,
and install into the hole closest to the switch head. Using a 3/32" allen wrench, tighten this allen screw
tightly to the handlebar. Allow 12 hours drying time at room temp before trying to use
the LH grip.
Installation of Scootworks Billet End Caps...
Slip a billet end cap
into the outer end of one grip. Apply a small drop of grip glue to one allen screw, and install
into the hole closest to the end cap. Using a 3/32" allen wrench, tighten this allen screw
tightly to the end cap. Repeat for opposite side.
Installation of Kuryakyn Accessory End Caps...
The use of Kuryakyn grip accessories
is easily accomplished with the Scootworks Billet Accessory Adapter Kit. In place of the Scootworks
Billet End Tip, install the adapter per previous instructions above. Install the Kuryakyn
accessory(s) and accent ring of choice (required) with the longer fasteners provided in the
adapter kit, and tighten.
Testing...
After curing time, test
your throttle to make sure it turns and releases easily. The throttle can bind if adhesive
is allowed to get in the end of the throttle tube, or under the edge of the switch housing.
Test the left grip to make sure it
is properly secured before riding.
