These instructions
are not all inclusive, there are simply too many accessories and variations
in manufacture of motorcycles to cover every possible alternative. However, we've
attempted to compile the most common issues and installation tips to assist in
installation of the Scootworks SWR-21 risers on your VN1700.
Begin installation...
Remove the
windshield from the bike (if used) to make installation somewhat more easy.
Cover the
gas tank with a towel or soft cloth. You'll thank us later, as things DO
slip and fall that can/will scratch your tank!
Remove the C-clips
on the bottom of the OEM riser bolts. Loosen and remove the two nuts (use 19mm wrench), washers,
and rubber washers from the lower riser mounts. These are on the bottom side of the upper
triple tree.
Remove the 4 chrome plugs on
the top of your OEM riser caps. Use a 8mm allen wrench and loosen the 4 allen bolts in the tops
of your OEM risers. Be prepared to hold the bards, they will drop downwards toward the tank
when you loosen these allen bolts.
Pull the bars up
and out of the OEM risers, and allow the handlebars to move downward and rest on the
cloth that covers your gas tank.
Gently pull on
the wiring bundles attached to your handlebars. You'll find there is an ample
amount of additional wiring to compensate for your new bar location with risers installed.
Remove the original long bolts
from inside of your OEM risers. They will push up and out of the riser. Replace them with the
new m12 x 40mm bolts supplied in the kit.
Look at your
new SWR-21 risers. You'll notice that one end has a section of the center bore with
a raised lip...this is the end that should be screwed onto the m12 x 40mm bolts now installed in
your OEM risers. Screw these on, VERY hand tight, but do not use any tools.
They will tighten additionally as the lower bolts are tightened, later.
Place one of the original
large metal washers that came from the bottom of the original mounting bolts onto each of the
two m14 x 60mm bolts supplied with the kit. Next, install one of your original rubber washers
onto the 60mm bolt. Insert these bolts up through the triple tree from the bottom, making sure
the rubber washers center on the raised features found on the lower side of the triple tree.
Place your new OEM riser/SWR-21 assembly on the top of the tree, making sure the rubber washers are
also in place on the top side, and screw it all the way down on the 60mm bolt. Snug this hand tight.
Raise the handlebars back into the top of the OEM risers, reinstall the top caps and 4 allen
bolts, and tighten the allen bolts to hold the handlebars in position. You may find it necessary to
loosen the bracket that holds the front brake line in the retaining notch on the front side of the
upper triple tree, and move the front brake hose to the outside and right of the bracket, and resecure
the bracket. This allows a more direct route for the front brake hose, and allows for more than enough
additional hose to make the installation comfortable.
While sitting on the bike, loosen the handlebar clamps enough to allow for the bars to be forcefully
moved up and down. Set the grip height to a comfortable position, and tighten the top clamps of the risers.
Tighten the lower riser bolts. Reinstall the windshield and any other accessories you may have
removed, and go for a ride!

FOR CLEANING AND CARE
Cleaning the Scootworks
POLISHED risers is an easy chore. Simply wash them with soap and water, wax them with
automotive wax. DO NOT use cleaners or waxes with abrasives or cleaning agents, and never use
any type of buffing or polishing compound. The Polished risers are manufactured from T6 (6160)
Aluminum billet, CAD designed and CNC manufactured for accuracy, and micropolished by hand for
an unbelievable luster. Unlike chrome plating, this finish will never chip, peel, or rust.
Scratches in chrome can never truly be removed Scratches and nicks in our Scootworks risers can
be easily removed with aluminum polishing compound, and the beautiful luster can be restored
at any time through the life of the riser by using a good grade of aluminum polish (we
recommend LusterPad). A good coat of automotive wax will keep them looking beautiful, and
minimize the polishing required.
