Scootworks SWR-13 Installation Tips for Yamaha Virago
These instructions
are not all inclusive, there are simply too many accessories and variations
in manufacture of motorcycles to cover every possible alternative. However, we've
attempted to compile the most common issues and installation tips to assist in
installation of the Scootworks SWR-13 riser kit on all Yamaha Virago motorcycles.
Begin installation...
Remove the
windshield from the bike (if used) to make installation somewhat more easy.
Cover the
gas tank with a towel or soft cloth. You'll thank us later, as things DO
slip and fall that can/will scratch your tank!
Remove the cotter pin (if used),
loosen and remove the nuts on the bottom of the handlebar mounts. These are on
the bottom side of the upper triple tree. Keep the nuts/washers, as they will be used during
installation of your new risers.
Loosen and remove the 4 allen bolts
in the tops of the factory riser caps. Hold the bars while doing this, as the
bars usually rotate downward and can contact your fuel tank. If you're installing our 304X-series
'Classic' risers, save these 4 bolts...they will be reused in the installation.
Lift the bars up
and out of the lower mount, and allow the
handlebars to move downward and rest on the cloth that covers your gas
tank. Remove the lower mounts from your triple tree at this time.
In most Virago installations,
we find that one needs to remove the two nuts that secure the indicator panel/speedometer cluster
to the top triple tree. This is the same two nuts that usually secure the signal light assembly to the
triple tree. Lift the indicator panel upward, move the wiring bundles to the outside of the
indicator panel, and relocate the clutch cable/hose to the back side of the LH turn signal.
We find it easy to also reposition the wire looms upward, or completely remove them, at this time.
Reinstall the indicator panel/speedometer cluster. Reinstall the nuts and tighten. Gently pull
on the wiring bundles attached to your handlebars. You'll find there is an ample amount of
additional wiring to compensate for your new bar location with risers installed.

Install the studs supplied in
our hdwr kit #11, into the bottom of the new risers. Install the stud with the large end of the
stud being screwed into the riser. Screw the large end into the riser until the large diameter
section of the stud is flush with the bottom of the riser (approx. 3/4" screwed in). Place the new
riser into the triple tree, and reinstall the original washers/nuts removed from the OEM mounts
earlier. Tighten only hand tight at this time.
Place one of the semi-circular
handlebar adapters into the lower section of the risers that are now installed on your triple tree.
Place the handlebars into the adapter/lower mounts. Place another semi-circular adapter on top of
each side of the handlbar, and install the upper handlebar caps (re-use your 4 upper cap bolts
as described earlier, if you're installing the 'Classic' 304X-series risers). Make sure the
semi-circular adapters do not protrude from the riser on either side, lift the bars to the
desired position, and tighten the top caps. Tighten hand tight. Twist the bars left or right
to position them straight (not twisted to one side or the other), then tighten the top
caps to 10 ft./lbs (very hand tight). Tighten the nuts on the bottom of the risers at this
time to approx. 15 ft./lbs.
*** NOTES
FOR CLEANING AND CARE
Cleaning these
Chrome risers is an easy chore. Simply wash them with soap and water, wax them with
automotive wax. DO NOT use cleaners or waxes with abrasives or cleaning agents, and never use
any type of buffing or polishing compound. A good coat of automotive wax will keep them
looking beautiful, and
minimize the polishing required.
